Meet the Artist: Lora Seiss

Patrons of Main Street Trolley will see some of Lora’s lovely paintings displayed around the shop and featured here on the Trolley’s blog, Twitter, and Facebook gallery.

Meet the artist: Lora is an accomplished artist who has been drawing and painting for all of her life. She has been selling her work over 20 years ago, and now has paintings available in Austria, the Tri-state area, North Carolina, Hawaii, California, Kentucky, and Oregon. She’s been commissioned to create over 350 portraits for patrons, and has sold many pieces in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and genres.  Lora regularly has shows at her home, and also enjoys displaying her work at the Trolley.

Lora especially likes working in oils as she feels that it gives her a special connection to the old masters. She thoroughly enjoys all types of painting – including abstract and nonrepresentational – but also derives great pleasure painting plein air.

When she isn’t painting, Lora shares her love of the arts by teaching aspiring students. She started teaching drawing and painting in 1995 because she wanted people to experience the joys of art.  She says, “Anyone can draw if they just have the desire to learn”; the students under her tutelage have proved that belief many times over. Lora delights in teaching at her home studio, and in 1995, she reached out to more students by taking a position at Frederick Community College.

For those of you who are interested in commissioning her work, taking lessons, or who would like to come to a show, feel free to call her at (301) 473-8942.

At the Trolley, Lora has a variety of beautiful pieces to represent her talent. From a dramatic lion done in charcoal, to striking abstracts, she has a little something to suit any home or gallery. Stop in to admire some of her work today.

Meet the Artist: Misty Blue Candles, Hand-made Soy Candles

Misty Blue Candles offers a wide selection of beautiful fragrances – some of which are exclusive to the Trolley. These handcrafted, all-natural candles are not cloyingly sweet, but provide the perfect ambiance for your home or special occasion.

Meet the artist:

Owner and founder Marsha Williard describes herself as a Garden Center Manager by day, and a candle-maker by night. She first dabbled in the scientific art of candle crafting about five years ago. She hated how much wasted wax there was when she bought a candle, in exchange for so little smell. So she got a double boiler and melted the excess wax down, making another candle. Inspired, she then started buying candle supplies from local craft stores like Michael’s and A.C. Moore, and crafted them as gifts for friends and family. Once she began to research the art of candle-making, though, she realized that there is a science to it too.

“I found quickly that I LOVE soy wax and wood wicks,” says Marsha. So she went with this new-found love and simply made more candles with the materials that she enjoyed.

She learnt also that there is a lot of “trial by fire” in candle-making – besides the real science of it. “You can’t just add wax, fragrance, oil, and a wick, and say ‘Here’s a candle.’ There could be real problems that way. I do a lot of testing to make sure all my candles burn correctly!”

As she kept making great candles, Marsha’s sister talked her into making some so she could take them into work and sell them for her. “It took off from there,” she says, “Everyone loved them!”

Encouraged, she put her first candles up for sale at the Main Street Trolley. She next tried her fortunes at Auction Square in Boonsboro, MD. And in July of 2013, she provided candles for Sweet Clover Barn. Her business has really expanded since; there is now a soon-to-open vendor in Snow Hill, MD called The Green Doors, which will be selling Misty Blue Candles’ products when they open their doors in November of 2013.

These candles are made with love and care, and here at the Main Street Trolley, we believe you can smell the difference. Marsha comments that she is addicted to collecting fragrances: She has over 85 different ones! She adds, “Every time I smell something new I think, ‘HumI love this, but would other people love this too?’ I do have people ask for certain fragrances, which I have no problem trying to find. I currently have six main vendors I purchase from, but there are countless more on the Internet.”

Some of her fabulous scents include (but are not limited to):

  • Orchard Cider
  • Citrus Breeze
  • Iced Cinnamon Buns
  • Blueberry Cobbler
  • Iced Lemon Biscotti
  • Cinnamon Stick
  • Apple Pumpkin
  • Sweet Pumpkin Spice

If these don’t tempt you, Misty Blue Candles does custom orders on request. Just in case you don’t see a fragrance you’re looking for, feel free to contact her and she may be able to find it for you. You can reach her via MistyBlueCandles.com, or find her on Facebook.

And now, for a limited time, the Main Street Trolley has a special scent available: Chardonnay. This is an absolutely stunning fragrance. Again, the best blend of intoxicating strength without being cloying or overpowering. It comes in a white wine glass, an amazingly quirky solution to candle gift-giving. These promise to be an elegant centerpiece.

The Trolley also has one more each of Perfect Plum and Moroccan Rose candles. These two fragrances are now discontinued, so these are the last.

Misty Blue Candles are available in an 8 oz Jelly Jar , 12 oz Tumbler, 16 oz Mason Jar,  and Melts (6 pieces per pack).

Burning tip: Keep a candle lit for one hour per inch of diameter. If you have a 3″ diameter candle, burn it for at least three hours. Make sure the wick is trimmed neatly to 1/4″ above the wax. Too short, and it won’t burn but will drown in wax. Too long and the flame will be too large and dangerous.

Misty Blue Candles are sold exclusively at:

Sweet Clover Barn: 4051 Stanford Court, Frederick MD.
Main Street Trolley Flowers and Gifts at H.C. Summers: 4002 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson MD.
Mar-Lu View Nursery: 3810 Lander Road, Jefferson MD.
The Green Doors: 307 North Washington St., Snow Hill , MD.
